RIGA: Lithuania and Germany have signed a defence cooperation agreement that forms the legal basis for soldiers from the two NATO partners to be stationed in the territory of the other country, according to the Ministry of Defence in Vilnius.
The agreement, which was signed on Tuesday by Vice Defence Minister Vytautas Umbrasas and German Ambassador Matthias Sonn, supplements the existing NATO forces statutes.
“Germany is the most important ally and supporter of European stability and security,” Umbrasas said.
The initiative for the agreement came from the German side. Lithuania had previously only made such an agreement with the United States, according to the ministry.
As part of increased protection for NATO’s eastern flank, the Bundeswehr is leading a NATO battalion in the Baltic state. (DPA)
