Teenaged Moto3 Leopard Racing rider Dennis Foggia repulsed animated bids by QMMF Team’s spearhead Saeed Al Sulaiti and claimed the sixth and last race in a virtual duel between the two teams at the floodlit Losail International Circuit on Monday.
The 19-year-old Foggia, continuing his surge, upped his game and first grabbed the pole position ahead of Al Sulaiti, the winner in four races, by 0.033 of a second. Then he brushed off numerous attempts by Al Sulaiti during the race, especially in the final two laps, before taking his bike past the finish line half a second quicker. Third place went to QMMF’s Sheikh Soud Al Thani, who beat Lorenzo Dalla Porta by two hundredths of a second.
Porta was the 2019 Moto3 world champion and moved to the intermediate class for Italtrans Racing Team of Italy. He was 24th in his debut race in Qatar earlier this year, while his teammate Enea Bastianini clinched the third spot behind winner Tetsuta Nagashima and Lorenzo Baldassarri, the runner-up.
The QMMF Team, driven by Al Sulaiti’s huge contribution of 232 points, amassed 617 in the SIM racing series and defeated the rivals by a good margin of 44 points.
For the home finale, Al Sulaiti was red hot favourite after taking four victories in five races. In fact, even the race that he did not win, he was second. With his vanquisher Danny Kent, the ex-Moto3 world champion not returning for the last race, Al Sulaiti was heavily tipped to cap his display with another triumph.
There was however an exciting early exchange of stinging moves and counter-moves between QORC Moto winner Al Sulaiti and Foggia, who was ninth in the Moto3 race in Qatar in the coronavirus-hit 2020 season. The lead changed hands and the pace set by them began to prove a bit too hot to match for the rest. In the fifth lap, Al Sulaiti came within three tenths of a second to catch Foggia, who was sixth in his first race and improved it to third in the second race.
Foggia however managed to maintain both focus and pace to stay ahead of Al Sulaiti and led him by plus one second in the sixth. For the first time, the margin grew between them to 1.5 seconds in the 10th lap and despite best of his efforts, Al Sulaiti was not able to dislodge Foggia off the P1. The fight suddenly jumped to another level when the last two laps were left.
Al Sulaiti mounted a sharp attack and would have overtaken Foggia before the T1 of the final lap. But he went wide and Foggia continued at the front and went on to defend the lead, winning the race by 0.571 margin. Sheikh Soud, just behind them, provided a pulsating slipstream drama and passed Porta just before the line to bag the third spot by two hundredths of a second much to the delights of the hosts QMMF.
Hamad Al Sahouti was fifth ahead of Marcos Ramirez and Sheikh Jassim Al Thani’s seventh place was not counted towards the team’s points as he was an extra rider for the QMMF Team. Results Grand Final (15 laps, Losail International Circuit, Qatar)
