Renowned Urdu writer and scholar Dr Mazhar Mahmood Shairani, passed away in Lahore recently.
He was the recipient of the 22nd Aalmi Frogh-e-Urdu Adab Award in 2018. The award has been instituted by Majlis e Frogh e Urdu Adab, a world renowned literary organisation based in Qatar since 1991.
Dr Mazhar was also a member of Majlis’ Pakistan Award Jury in 2019 and 2020. He was the son of Akhtar Shairani, a well-known poet and grandson of Prof Mahmood Shairani, a reputed research scholar and critic. Dr Mazhar was born on October 9, 1935 in Jodhpur, British India. He passed
his matric examination in 1952, FA examination in 1954, BA in 1956, MA (History) in 1958, MA (Persian) in 1960 and PhD (Urdu) in 1987. Dr Mazhar had a very long teaching and research experience. He served as a lecturer, assistant professor and associate professor of Persian in various government colleges in Muzaffargarh, Sheikhupura and Lahore from October 1960 to October 1995. From October 2003 to June 2017, he was associated with Government College/University, Lahore as a research supervisor. He also supervised preparation of Persian to Urdu dictionary.
He supervised and guided a number of students in Islamabad and Lahore, who were later awarded M.Phil and Ph.D degrees.
During his distinguished career, he wrote a large number of research articles, which were published in more than 50 books and journals.
Mohammad Atiq, Chairman of Majlis e Frogh e Urdu Adab, described Dr Mazhar’s death as an irreparable loss for Urdu language, Pakistan and
Majlis e Frogh e Urdu Adab.
