Four primary health care centres have been developed and operated within Syria with funding from the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) and in partnership with the Qatar Charity, at an estimated cost of 7,300,000 Qatari riyals, to support 144,000 people in northern Syria.
Idlib is home to the medical centres, which have been in operation since August 2019.
The aim of this project is to improve the medical situation in northern Syria, in coordination with local and international organisations active in the health sector, UN coordination and technical bodies such as the Health Cluster, the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF.
Deputy Director-General for Development Projects at QFFD, Misfer bin Hamad al Shahwani, stressed that QFFD has contributed to efforts to combat coronavirus in refugee and displaced areas in northern Syria and Turkey by implementing a number of medical projects to serve refugees and the people of the host country, focusing on providing medical equipment and personnel, protection, food security, etc.
He added that the project works to rehabilitate, restore, equip and support health centers with medical personnel and supplies, provide primary health services, organise health awareness campaigns and promote public health in coordination with the WHO Early Warning, Alert and Response Network (EWARN).
The project also works on addressing non-communicable diseases and providing preventive and clinical services, including reproductive health , child health , mental health, and the nutrition program, which includes support for the nutrition and food survey programme in society.
In addition , the project publishes and distributes health awareness items, trains medical teams to provide treatment services for acute malnutrition patients in hospitals, distributes food and supplements, and supports nutrition programs for infants and children.
Every month, 15,000 patients, mostly women, children and the elderly, receive free healthcare services in the four centres.
Ahmed al Rumaihi, Director of the International Relief and Partnership Department at Qatar Charity, said that the Qatar Charity Regional Office in Turkey has developed a contingency plan for the development of coronavirus (COVID-19) to adjust medical services at these centres.
The regional office has set up a triage camp at the entrance of each center to sort patients and prevent coronavirus spread. These centers have also been linked to community isolation centers, of which Qatar Charity is one of the most important supporters.
One of the residents of the camp said that the centre saved a lot of time and effort in addition to providing free medicines that eased the suffering of the displaced people.
It is worth mentioning that Qatar Charity is one of the most active organisations in coordinating efforts in the field of health in northern Syria, where the health team of its office is keen to participate in meetings of the health group concerned with the health situation in northern Syria on an ongoing basis, in cooperation with the relevant bodies of international organisations.
