MOSCOW: An ecosystem in far-northern Russia will need at least a decade to recover from a recent massive diesel spill, a senior environmental official said on Thursday.
“I think it would take many years for the ecosystem to recover, maybe even 10 years at least. The damage is rather substantial,” Deputy Environment Minister Yelena Panova said in comments carried by state news agency TASS.
Waterways near the Arctic city of Norilsk have been rapidly polluted by a spill of a more than 20,000 tons of diesel fuel that occurred last week as a diesel tank ruptured at a thermal power plant. Melting permafrost amid abnormally warm temperatures is believed to have caused a collapse of a structure that had been supporting the tank, according to a statement by the city’s main employer, metals miner Norilsk Nickel.
