Spain’s medical personnel, who have been at the forefront in the fight against the coronavirus for months, will receive the prestigious Princesa de Asturias Award for Concord, the jury announced on Wednesday.
The doctors and nurses who have been working at “the front line” have stood out by showing “absolute commitment” and “laudable professionalism,” the jury said when explaining their decision.
In the treatment of Covid-19 patients, they often did not have the necessary protective equipment and selflessly put their own health at risk, added the jury.
Spain is one of the countries worst hit by the pandemic, recording about 240,000 coronavirus infections and more than 27,000 deaths.
However, the numbers are currently improving. On Tuesday, no new death in relation to the virus was recorded the second day in a row. The Princesa de Asturia awards are named after the Spanish heir to the throne and are awarded in eight different categories each year. The other winners will be announced over the coming months.
Laureates also receive prize money of 50,000 euros (61,600 dollars) and a reproduction of a Joan Miro statue.
King Felipe VI of Spain will present the awards in Oviedo, in northern Spain, at the end of October.
