CONTINUING its multiple achievements in terms of excellence in the scientific research field, Qatar University’s (QU) Young Scientist Center (YSC) has earned nomination for the National Scientific Research Competition 2020.
Five YSC research projects are among 720 participating projects from different schools and educational authorities that have been nominated for the prestigious contest.
The centre’s research works focus on energy, engineering, chemistry and materials science, earth and environmental sciences, as well as plants and animal sciences.
The projects are characterised by brilliant ideas, providing innovative solutions to issues concerning different scientific fields.
The research entitled ‘Mechanical energy harvesting from polymer based fibres’ has been nominated for the ‘Energy’ category, while another entitled ‘Biodegradable polymer nano-composite for transparent electronics’ has been nominated for the ‘Environmental Engineering’ category.
Similarly, in the ‘Plant and Animal Sciences’ category a research entitled ‘Hydrogel sensors for agricultural applications’ was nominated, while the research entitled ‘Dye wastewater treatment’ was nominated for the ‘Earth and Environmental Sciences’ category.
In addition, a research entitled ‘Polymeric nano-composite coatings for corrosion protection of steel’ was nominated for the chemistry and material science category.
The ideas for these projects were generated in the laboratories of Qatar University and developed by the YSC students under the supervision of specialised researchers and expert professors in the field of scientific research. All teams worked with their supervisors with great enthusiasm and professionalism to bring the projects to the highest scientific levels and achieve the best practical results. All participants made great effort in conducting the scientific experiments and performing sample tests using advanced laboratory equipment. All steps of the scientific researchers have been recorded in high quality research reports.
Dr Nora Jaber Al Thani, director of the YSC-QU, expressed her pride over the nomination of the researches for the National Scientific Research Competition 2020. She said, “Our continuous endeavour to involve our students in scientific competitions comes in the context of the centre’s interest in enhancing the research skills from the early educational stages, as the development of young minds is the key to scientific progress and the advancement of Qatar. She also thanked the centre’s sponsors the Ras Laffan Social Communication Program, and the center’s partners including UNESCO Doha Office and the Qatar National Committee for Education, Culture and Science for their support.
One of the main goals of YSC is to involve students in scientific research and create all possible opportunities for them to guarantee their effective participation. The centre also enhances their leadership skills, critical and creative thinking, while encouraging creativity and entrepreneurship among them. The centre’s students have witnessed successes in many national and international research competitions.
