Restaurants, cafes and bars across France reopened on Tuesday, more than two and a half months after they were shuttered to slow down the spread of the coronavirus.
In Paris and surrounding areas, where the virus was particularly widespread, only outdoor seating was allowed.
On the Left Bank of the capital, Parisians enjoyed drinks and, for some, a first outdoor lunch of the summer at shaded tables placed a minimum of 1 metre apart.
Several government ministers posted pictures to social media of themselves sipping coffees on cafe terraces.
“The reopening of the cafes, hotels and restaurants marks the return of happy days!” President Emmanuel Macron tweeted.
“There can be no doubt but that the French people will be there to renew with this part of the French spirit, our culture and our art of living,” he added.
