Bangladesh has reported the first Covid-19 death in a huge refugee settlement located in the country’s south-eastern district of Cox’s Bazar, officials said on Tuesday.
The 71-year old Rohingya man died early on Tuesday, two days after he tested positive with the novel coronavirus at a charity-run isolation centre in Kutupalong refugee camp, said Mahbubur Rahman, head of the district health services.
On May 14, the South Asian country reported the first two cases of novel coronavirus in the Kutupalong camp, home to more than 700,000 out of 1 million Rohingya Muslims living in Bangladesh after fleeing persecution in neighbouring Buddhist-majority Myanmar.
Nearly 750,000 crossed the border after Myanmar launched a military crackdown on the ethnic minority group in August 2017.
Abu Toha Bhuiyan, the coordinator of health services at the refugee camp, said nine family members were quarantined after the death of the Rohingya man.
He added 30 people had so far tested COVID-19 positive in the camps, which is still under lockdown, with only emergency aid workers allowed inside.
Bangladesh relaxed its nationwide lockdown on Sunday. The country reported more than 50,000 cases of novel coronavirus, with 709 deaths since the first three cases were reported.
