One person that flew from Germany to the Chinese city of Tianjin as part of a return programme organized by the German Chamber of Commerce has tested positive for Covid-19, the respiratory illness caused by the virus.
Tianjin authorities said Sunday that a 34-year-old engineer - one of the 200 representatives of German industry and their relatives to return to China on Saturday after becoming stuck in Germany due to the pandemic - had tested positive.
They added that the passenger was asymptomatic and was being brought to a central quarantine facility.
The majority of the 200 people who returned to China on Saturday are undergoing two weeks of quarantine in a Tianjin hotel.
The next flight that is part of the return programme will depart for Shanghai on Wednesday.
As the spread of the coronavirus accelerated across Europe in March, China closed its borders to European nationals and suspended visas to prevent imported cases.
Many Chinese nationals and their families became stranded in Germany, with up to 2,500 people expressing an interest returning as part of a special flight programme.
