Tehran Between 200 and 225 people were killed in demonstrations in Iran last year, Iranian media reported on Sunday, based on calculations.
Their estimates are based on a statement by Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli, who said “40 to 45, that is 20 per cent” of the dead were police and security officers.
So far the government has refused to state the numbers who were killed in nationwide protests that broke out last November following an increase in petrol prices and the rationing of fuel.
Fazli is expected to announce the death toll in the near future.  Iranian security forces used force to suppress the demonstrations and unconfirmed reports place the death toll at between 300 and 1,500.
More than 1,000 people were arrested including 180 “ringleaders” who may face the death penalty.
Iran prevented information from being shared about the protests by blocking the internet. (DPA)
