The lockdown in Paris is gradually being lifted, as cafes and restaurants were permitted to reopen from Sunday if they host guests on sidewalks and terraces outdoors.   Restaurants and cafes may take up more space on the streets in order to host people outside, Mayor Anne Hidalgo told Le Parisien newspaper.
France recorded a high number of deaths in the pandemic, and Paris was particularly badly hit. The country is gradually lifting restrictions as the number of infections falls but health regulations are in place.
Dining establishments suffered as a result of the lockdown, imposed in mid-March, and many owners complained about the resulting loss of income.  Hidalgo also reopened the square in front of Paris’ iconic Notre Dame cathedral on Sunday, slightly more than a year after a devastating fire destroyed its roof.
Authorities had closed the area in front of the building due to fears of lead poisoning, as flames burned almost 500 tons of lead in the roof, releasing dust onto the ground below.  Repairs to the cathedral continue after an interruption due to the lockdown.
President Emmanuel Macron is eager for the cathedral to be rebuilt within five years but many doubt whether this will be possible.
