The Indonesian resort island of Bali is adopting new measures as it starts to ease some of its coronavirus restrictions, an official said on Sunday.
Bali Deputy Governor Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardhana Sukawati said the island is limiting who can enter and leave based on certain criteria.
On-duty government officials and people from the private sector who perform services to help curb the coronavirus’ spread are on the list of those who can come to the island, as are individuals with nuclear family members who are dead or gravely ill, and Bali residents returning from work or study abroad.
“Even though the number of infection cases in Bali is low compared to other regions in Indonesia, we continue to see the number of new cases increasing every day,” Sukawati said.
Those entering the island by air or land must provide a set of documents, including a health certificate that they are not infected, and wearing face masks in public is now obligatory for everyone.
“This measure is to curb the number of local transmission, which continue to happen,” Sukawati said.
Indonesia recorded 700 new cases on Sunday, bringing the national tally to 26,473, while the death toll rose to 1,613 with the passing of 40 more people, Health Ministry official Achmad Yurianto said.
Out of the total national caseload, Bali accounts for 465 positive infections, with 10 new cases on Sunday.
