Minister of Education and Higher Education HE Dr Mohammed Abdul Wahed Ali al Hammadi has welcomed the UN General Assembly’s decision to adopt a proposal mooted by HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser and establish September 9 as the “International Day to Protect Education from Attack”.
Sheikha Moza is the Chairperson of the Education Above All Foundation and a UN Sustainable Development Goals’ advocate.
The resolution, advocated by Qatar, sought to mobilise international support to ensure accountability for the persistent and deliberate attacks on education and the armed violence from which children around the world are suffering.
This reaffirms that for Qatar education has been a strategic choice that it took over two decades ago under the supervision of HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, the Minister said.
“The adoption of the draft resolution came during the crisis of COVID-19 pandemic, which had a profound impact on all aspects of life to emphasise the importance of education and schools as a safe haven for children against any attack, especially during armed conflicts targeting educational institutions,” he added.
“We thank Her Highness for this proposal and we congratulate her and ourselves for adopting it,” he added.
