ETHIOPIA, through its embassy in Qatar, has lauded Qatar’s gesture to send medical supplies earlier this week to help the country in the fight the coronavirus (COVID-19).
The shipment, which weighed 8.5 tonnes of medical supplies, was sent to Ethiopia under the direction of the Amir His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani. Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) sent urgent medical assistance to support Ethiopia’s efforts to counter and contain the spread of COVID-19.
Qatar Airways delivered the medical equipment and supplies, including surgical masks, N95 face masks, FF3 masks, FF2 masks, gloves, coveralls, surgical gowns, goggles and face shields.
In a statement, Ethiopian Ambassador to Qatar HE Samia Zekaria said, “The Government of Ethiopia highly values the support of the Government of Qatar at this critical time. It is also an indication of the growing bilateral ties between the two countries.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed, Health Minister Dr Lia Tadesse, Minister of Labour and Social Affairs Dr Ergogie Tesfaye, State Minister of Health Dr Dereje Duguma and other higher officials have thanked the Government of Qatar and His Highness the Amir. Our Embassy would also like to extend its heartfelt greetings and gratitude to HH The Amir.”
The ambassador and Director-General of QFFD Khalifa bin Jassim al Kuwari, sent off the shipment.
The ambassador said the embassy is also thankful for the support extended by Qatar Charity, the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs and other institutions for helping the Ethiopian community in Doha.
“We are hopeful that these institutions will continue their assistance until we overcome the challenge that COVID-19 has brought.”
The ambassador reiterated that this support through QFFD is not the only partnership that two countries have in the health sector, as multiple projects are in the pipeline. “The QFFD and the Ethiopian Ministry of Health have signed an agreement to establish a Kidney Treatment Hospital in Addis Ababa,” the ambassador informed.
According to her, Ethiopia and Qatar are working together to take the bilateral ties to a new level in terms of economic and political cooperation.
