South Korea reported an uptick in novel coronavirus cases on Wednesday, with 40 new recorded incidents, the country’s highest daily rise in seven weeks, according to the Health Ministry.
Particular concern is focused on a cluster of infections at the logistics centre of an online retailer based in Bucheon, a city to the west of Seoul. There had been 36 cases of the virus among the company’s 4,000 employees as of early Wednesday.
Authorities think the virus might have been carried there by a worker exposed earlier this month during an outbreak of the virus in Seoul’s popular Itaewon nightlife district.
About 250 infections have been linked to that outbreak, which started when a 29-year-old carried the virus onto multiple crowded dance floors.
Employees at the company in Bucheon have now been asked to submit to tests so authorities can get a grasp on how far the infection has spread there.
The new numbers reported on Wednesday bring South Korea’s overall number of infections to 11,265, with 269 deaths.
At the end of February, South Korea was seeing up to 900 new cases a day, but has, since then, largely managed to contain the spread of the disease.
