Islamabad Pakistani authorities said on Wednesday they are struggling to deal with an invasion of desert locust that has raised fears of a food security crisis in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic.
“At least 61 districts of the country are under the locust attack,” Saqib Mumtaz, a spokesman for National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) told dpa.
Surveillance and control operations are underway in affected areas.
“This year’s locust invasion is a serious threat to national food security,” said Nisar Khaskhali, member of a regional chamber of farmers in Pakistan’s southern Sindh province.
In a recent report, the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said the insect was breeding across 38 percent of the area of Pakistan and warned the “entire country is under the threat of invasion if the desert locust is not contained.” (DPA)
