Marking the Africa Day on Monday, the African Women’s Diplomatic Group lauded Qatar for its support to the African countries during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
The theme of Africa Day 2020 was ‘Silencing the Guns: Creating Conducive Conditions for Africa’s Development and Intensifying the Fight against the COVID-19 Pandemic’. The Qatar government is contributing greatly to turning the aspirations of this theme into reality, said the group.
In a statement on behalf of the group, Anika Moosa, president of the group and the spouse of the South African Ambassador to Qatar, said, “In our virtual celebration, we want to convey our appreciation and gratitude to the government of Qatar for its continued attention to Africa. The Amir His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani has made several tours to various countries in Africa, and Qatar has hosted many African leaders in Doha. HH the Amir discussed a wide range of issues and has signed many pacts and memoranda of understanding related to investment, economy and other sectors. All these were aimed at boosting economic and development partnerships in Africa.
“We appreciate the generosity of Qatar for the shipments of urgent medical aid, which included masks and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for medical staff, to several African countries to support their efforts to contain the outbreak of COVID-19.”
“The group also wishes to convey its congratulations and best wishes for
good health and happiness to the government of Qatar, citizens and residents on the occasion of Eid Al-Fitr,” she added.
As part of celebrating the Africa Day, several African nationals -- Africans in the diaspora as well as descendants of Africa -- organised events that highlighted the vibrancy of African cultures, cuisines and traditions. Most of them were virtual events due to the pandemic situation.
The Africa Day is observed annually on May 25 to commemorate the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) on May 25, 1963 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The day provides an opportunity to recount the political and socio-economic achievements of African governments and citizens.
