Burundi’s main opposition has already refuted the results of the general elections after the ruling party was announced the provisional winner on Monday.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) announced that Evariste Ndayishimiye of the National Council for the Defence of Democracy-Force for the Defence of Democracy (CNDD-FDD) had taken 68.72 percent of the presidential vote, whereas the leader of the Congress for Freedom (CNL), Agathon Rwasa, had 24.19 percent.
The CNDD-FDD won 72 seats, the CNL 27 and the Uprona Party one seat in the legislative poll, CENI said, adding that 87.11 per cent of the electorate had cast their ballots.
The opposition, however, disputed the results.
“We have all the evidence and the real figures of these elections. We will seek justice,” Terence Manirambona, CNL party spokesperson, told dpa.
Voting in the tiny East African country took place despite the coronavirus pandemic and incidents that suggested the ballot would not be free or fair.
They documented numerous human rights abuses including abductions, torture, killings and harassment during the past six months.
There were no independent observers, as the only ones permitted by the government were ordered to remain in quarantine because of the pandemic.
Before the elections, a number of experts as well as the UN expressed concern that a win would not be accepted by the losing party which could lead to a lengthy political crisis.
Final results are expected on June 4.
