Madrid The Spanish lifeboat service and the police have rescued a total of 62 migrants from five boats in the Mediterranean within the past two days.
The people - all Algerians - were discovered on Wednesday and Thursday off the coast of the south-eastern region of Murcia and taken to the ports of Cartagena and Aguila, news agency Europa Press reported citing local authorities. The people were subjected to a health check, which included a test for the coronavirus, said the representative of the central government in Murcia, Jose Velez.
He thanked all the rescue workers involved and reminded the migrants that they were fleeing a “social and political drama” and that Spain had an obligation to protect “their rights and dignity.” Spain, along with Italy and Greece, is one of the countries on the EU’s external borders where the most refugees and other migrants arrive. The main route runs from North Africa across the Mediterranean. (DPA)
