THE smallest planet ‘Mercury’ will be approaching the brightest planet ‘Venus’ over Qatar sky and that of the Arab region on Friday (May 22) evening, where Mercury will be at one-degree from the northern Venus’ centre over the western horizon of Qatar, the Qatar Calendar House (QCH) announced on Thursday.
Residents of Qatar and the Arab world have a good chance to observe Mercury very close to Venus in the evening with naked eyes or by using astronomical telescopes, expert astronomer at QCH Dr Beshir Marzouk said.
Dr Marzouk, however, said the cosmological phenomenon would be visible only from places without environment and light pollution right from the sunset time (6:16pm) until the setting time of Mercury and Venus (7:44pm)
Doha local time. Dr Marzouk said the astronomical phenomenon is very important for amateur astronomers who wish to know the map of the sky during this month.
Mercury approached Venus the last time on April 17, 2019, where the angular distance between Venus and Mercury was four degrees.
