South Korean health authorities raised concerns on Tuesday as they recorded a further spike in confirmed coronavirus cases linked to clubs and bars in the capital Seoul, according to media reports.
The number of infections traced back to a cluster in Seoul’s Itaewon district, known for its nightlife, bars, clubs and restaurants, had by Tuesday climbed to 102, Yonhap news agency reported, citing the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC).
Of the confirmed cases, 73 had visited establishments in Itaewon in person, and then infected another 29 family members or contacts, the report said.
Health officials are now searching for further possible contacts in an attempt to break the infection chain. At the weekend Seoul temporarily closed all clubs and discos.
Seoul wants to locate 5,517 people who visited clubs in Itaewon between April 27 and May 8, a spokesperson from the office of mayor Park Won-soon said on Monday. More than 3,000 people have been tested who either attended clubs or were in contact with people who had.
Authorities are checking credit-card transactions, smartphone data and CCTV in an attempt to locate the remainder.
The action was sparked by the positive test of a young man who was already infected as he visited at least five night clubs and bars in Itaewon on the night of May 2.
South Korea confirmed a total of 27 new cases in the 24 hours to Monday, bringing the nationwide total to 10,936.
