US President Donald Trump spoke with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on arms control negotiations, and insisted he wants China to be brought into talks.
Beijing has previously ruled out being part of what have previously been bilateral arms control deals between Washington and Moscow, the nations with the two largest nuclear arsenals by far.
“President Trump reaffirmed that the United States is committed to effective arms control that includes not only Russia, but also China, and looks forward to future discussions to avoid a costly arms race,” a White House statement said, following the phone call with Putin.
Of previous arms control architecture there is only one agreement still in effect between Russia and the US, the New Start treaty, which expires next year.
That deal keeps in check the size of their arsenals. Moreover, the agreement includes inspections and monitoring regimes.
The US and Russia pulled out of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty last year. Washington accused Moscow of cheating but also highlighted its growing interest in not being bound by treaties to which China is not a party, as Beijing rises as a global power. (DPA)
