Despite Germany’s success in slowing the spread of the coronavirus, social distancing will remain necessary until June 5, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Wednesday.  “We can afford a bit of courage, but we have to remain careful,” Merkel said.
Keeping personal contact to a minimum is important in preventing infections from spreading quickly and overloading the health-care system, Merkel said.
Germany’s progress in fighting the coronavirus pandemic remains positive notwithstanding the initial steps taken to ease the restrictions, Merkel said after a conference call on Wednesday with state leaders on how to proceed against COVID-19.  Without everyone’s participation, the measures would not be effective, Merkel said. “Every bit of freedom that is possible must be used responsibly by each and every person under the circumstances of the virus.”
The daily number of new infections has fallen below 1,000 in Germany, Merkel said, calling the numbers were “very pleasing.” But she noted that while the first phase of the pandemic is behind us, there is a long way to go before the battle with the virus is over.
