MOSCOW: The percentage of Russians who approve of President Vladimir Putin’s leadership has fallen to an all-time low of 59 per cent, the country’s largest independent pollster, Levada Centre, said on Wednesday.
Putin remains popular among groups who have “limited ability to change their lives for the better,” such as the elderly and certain rural populations, the pollster said in a statement.
Only 12 per cent of young adults, aged 18 to 24, approve of Putin’s work, the pollster said.
The poll was conducted late last month as Russia’s reported coronavirus caseload surpassed that of neighbouring China, where the virus originated. Russia’s oil-dependent economy has also suffered amid a global economic slowdown caused by the pandemic, with reduced trade pushing down oil prices to historic lows.
There is rising discontent among Russians who have “not received the expected help amid the growing economic crisis,” the pollster said.
Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, dismissed the pollster’s assessment, saying that other surveys have provided contradictory results.
“We have repeatedly said that they use different methods. We are not inclined to completely trust the results of these surveys,” Peskov said in comments carried by the Russian news agency Interfax. (DPA)
