Tunisian Health Minister Abdellatif El Mekki voiced his concerns on Sunday as the North African country prepared to loosen restrictions in place to limit an outbreak of the novel coronavirus.
Tunisia is due on Monday to ease a lockdown imposed in late March, allowing some businesses to reopen in an attempt to revitalize the economy.
“This easing has been dictated by the need to activate economic life and has not been dictated by luxuries,” El Mekki said in a Facebook post.
Authorities have set obligatory health measures for businesses and individuals ahead of loosening the restrictions.
They include wearing protective face masks, avoiding overcrowding, and observing social-distancing and sterilizing rules.
However, El Mekki warned that the more relaxed measures would only be feasible as long as the public stuck to the rules.
Tunisia so far has reported a total of 1,009 coronavirus cases, resulting in 42 deaths.
