Egyptian security forces said on Sunday that they had killed scores of militants in the restive Sinai region, where an Islamist insurgency is ongoing.
In a statement released on Sunday, spokesman for the Armed Forces Tamer al-Refai said 126 militants had been killed during raids and operations in northern and central Sinai over the past few days.
He said that 228 hideouts and eight tunnels used by terrorists had been destroyed, 630 explosive devices were detonated by the military and 266 suspects had been arrested.
The spokesman added that 15 military personnel were killed or wounded in clashes that occurred during the operations.
In a separate statement released earlier in the day, the Interior Ministry said that 18 militants had been killed in a shootout during a raid in the province of North Sinai.
The militants had been using a house in the town of Bir al-Abd as a hideout to launch their “hostile operations,” the ministry said in a statement.
It added that 13 machine guns, three explosive devices and two explosive belts were found in their possession.
On Thursday, an explosive device hit an armoured vehicle south of Bir al-Abd, resulting in 10 casualties among the soldiers. An army spokesman did not specify how many people had been killed and how many had been injured in the blast.
