Seoul At least 37 people have died in a large fire at a warehouse building site in South Korea, a spokesman for the fire brigade said on Wednesday.
The number of fatalities could rise further, as several workers were still missing, the spokesman said.
The incident occurred in Icheon, a city 50 kilometres south-east of Seoul. At the time of the incident, around 78 people were present at the site. A further 10 people were reported injured in the fire, which is thought to have been caused by an explosion that occurred in one of the lower floors of the multi-storey building. Of those injured, four are in serious condition.
Flammable materials were being used at the building site, enabling the fire to spread quickly, according to the national broadcaster KBS. The fire brigade spokesman said the fire took a total of five hours to extinguish. (DPA)
