At least 23 security forces’ personnel and four civilians were killed in overnight attacks on several checkpoints across Afghanistan, officials said on Wednesday.
The biggest incident happened in the country’s northern Sar-e Pol province where 11 members of the security forces were killed after Taliban militants attacked their checkpoints in two districts, officials told dpa.
Another 19 were wounded.
In eastern Logar province, eight policemen were killed and five others were wounded after the militants ambushed and attacked a checkpoint that protects a copper mine in the province, an official said.
In volatile Uruzgan province in the south, four policemen were killed and five others wounded in attacks targeting checkpoints in the capital Tarin Kot City, another official said.
Several Taliban fighters were also reported to have been killed.
In addition, four civilians were killed in central Ghazni province after their vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb, the country’s interior ministry announced.
In total, over a hundred people have been killed or injured in the last four days in Taliban attacks and bombings in several Afghan provinces.
The Taliban have historically announced their spring offensive around this time of the year. However, this year there has been no official statement by the group so far.
Taliban inked a deal with the United States in late February that paved the way for prisoner exchanges - which have already begun - and potential inter-Afghan peace talks.
