Calm was prevailing in war-wracked Yemen, witnesses said on Thursday, a day after a Saudi-led alliance fighting Iran-linked rebels announced a temporary ceasefire to focus attention on battling the new coronavirus.
No fighting was taking place on the various battlegrounds in Yemen between government forces and the Houthi rebels, the sources added.
However, pro-rebel television al-Masirah reported that alliance jets mounted a series of strikes in several Houthi-controlled areas despite the truce announcement. The broadcaster gave no figures of potential casualties.
On Wednesday, the Saudi-led alliance said it would observe a renewable two-week ceasefire in Yemen in response to UN calls for halting military hostilities around the globe to battle the coronavirus.
Yemen has not officially recorded any cases of the virus that causes the potentially fatal Covid-19 respiratory disease.
An alliance statement said the truce would begin Thursday at 12 local time without making clear if the time was midnight or noon.
However, Yemeni Vice President Ali Mohsen Saleh, who is residing in Saudi Arabia, confirmed that the truce was in effect as of noon (0900 GMT) on Thursday, according to Yemen’s official news agency Saba.
