Qatar Chamber’s Education Committee has called on private schools to exempt the parents from paying the bus charges as part of the school fees. If the schools have already collected the bus charges, the amount should be transferred to next year’s fee, the committee proposed.
The committee made the request during an online meeting held to discuss the obstacles faced by the private education sector in view of the coronavirus crisis.
The meeting was headed by the committee’s Chairperson Mohamed bin Ahmed bin Twar al Kuwari.
HE Dr Ibrahim bin Saleh al Nuaimi, undersecretary of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, and Omar bin Abdul Aziz al Nemah, assistant undersecretary of the ministry, were also present.
The meeting discussed the reluctance of parents to pay the outstanding school fees for the current academic year and the closure of education centres and kindergartens, as well as the challenges in distance learning.
The committee called on the Ministry of Education and Higher Education to ensure communication and coordination between parents and schools in this regard.
The attendees emphasised the right of private schools to collect school fees if they complete the educational process through the remote system. This will ensure the school’s ability to meet its financial obligations such as salaries, they said.
The committee stressed the importance of the ministry’s support to private schools through accelerating the disbursement of educational vouchers to ensure financial flow during the crisis.
The committee also evaluated schools according to their performance in the provision of distance learning. Some schools received ‘Excellent’ score, while some others got only ‘Pass’ for their performance.
The ministry of education had provided many options for private schools in case they fail to implement the process of distance learning such as providing parents with worksheets at the end of every week, the committee noted.
The attendees pointed out that the closure of education centres has caused significant damage, pointing to the centres’ demand for state’s support.
The meeting also discussed problems facing a few kindergartens that are incapable of implementing the distance learning properly. The meeting proposed that the second term exams should not be cancelled but be conducted online.
Nuaimi confirmed the Minister of Education and Higher Education’s follow-up on all measures to overcome the difficulties faced by the private education sector. He urged private schools to take into account the current circumstances and condition of families and parents, stressing the ministry’s interest to support the schools in their development plans.
Nemah said the ministry has made available all educational materials for private schools to use in the distance learning process. He stressed that ministry and QC’s Education Committee are in constant communication to provide support for education process in the current circumstances.
The meeting reviewed the study prepared by the Chamber on the repercussions of coronavirus on the private sector in general and the ways to take advantage of it. The study’s suggestions and recommendations will be submitted to the authorities concerned in the State.
The meeting also discussed the committee’s initiative to provide technical support to educational establishments that are not capable of providing distance learning.
