LONDON
BRITAIN reported another daily record of 938 coronavirus-linked deaths on Wednesday, taking its total to more than 7,000.
The health ministry said the total of confirmed infections rose to nearly 61,000 from 282,000 people tested, but government experts estimate that many hundreds of thousands of people are infected.
US researchers have forecast that Britain is likely to record Europe’s highest number of coronavirus-linked deaths.
Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is “responding to treatment” and remains stable in intensive care at a London hospital following his infection with novel coronavirus, Downing Street said on Wednesday.
“The prime minister remains clinically stable and is responding to treatment,” a spokesman said. “He continues to be cared for in the intensive care unit at St Thomas’s Hospital. He’s in good spirits.”
Johnson is still receiving “standard oxygen treatment” but he is breathing without any other assistance, the spokesman added.
The prime minister was moved to intensive care late Monday, following his admission to hospital on Sunday for tests after he experienced “persistent symptoms” of the novel coronavirus. He reported his infection with the virus on March 27.
Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab is deputising for Johnson.
Government experts estimate that hundreds of thousands of people are infected with the novel coronavirus, which can cause the respiratory disease. A forecast by US researchers suggested that Britain is likely to record Europe’s highest number of coronavirus-linked deaths.
