Cyclone Harold lashed the Pacific Island state of Fiji on Wednesday, just days after it ripped through Vanuatu.
The category 4 tropical cyclone has damaged homes and caused widespread flooding across Fiji, according to meteorological and disaster authorities.
“This afternoon, the eye of Category 4 Tropical Cyclone Harold will arrive at Kadavu bringing the worst of the heavy rains, winds and flooding to Fiji,” Fiji Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama said on Wednesday in a video posted on his Twitter account.
“Our evacuations centres are safe, sanitized, and monitored to ensure that they do not surpass capacity. Those under quarantine due to coronavirus will not mix with others.”
“Stay indoors. Do not travel. Stay safe, Fiji,” Bainimarama said.
The cyclone is expected to hit the main island Viti Levu, where capital Suva is located, on Wednesday night, prompting the government to impose restrictions on movement and only allow emergency services on the road.
A total of 25 evacuation centres has been activated across Fiji.
