The Public Works Authority (Ashghal), in coordination with the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs (MADLSA), has launched intensive inspection campaigns at workplaces and labour accommodations to ensure the compliance of contracting companies with the precautionary and preventive measures taken by Ashghal based on the directives of MADLSA.
The campaigns are part of the efforts to protect workers involved in Ashghal projects from contracting coronavirus (COVID-19).
Engineer Abdulla Qassim, an official of the Khalifa Avenue project of the Highway Projects Department of Ashghal, said the Authority conducts regular inspection tours at the workplace and follows all the instructions given to companies executing projects to maintain safety of workers at work sites and contain the spread of coronavirus.
He added that the Khalifa Avenue project is one of the vital projects that achieved 79 million working hours without worktime injuries among 7,000 workers due to the company’s commitment to the health and safety measures statted by Ashghal.
He said Ashghal has ensured that companies implementing projects are aware of the seriousness of the issue and take all preventive measures to minimise the spread of the virus without affecting the workflow.
Engineer Qasim said all precautions were also taken at the project workers accommodation where daily checks were made to ensure the health and safety of workers, as there is a clinic licensed by the Ministry of Public Health in the accommodation.
Apart from a clinic on the work site, emergency isolation rooms were also provided in the event of a suspected case among the workers in order to communicate with the authorities in the Ministry of Public Health to take the necessary action.
For his part, Nasser al Hajri from the Inspection Department of the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs said the ministry always conducts visits in coordination with Ashghal to ensure companies implement labours’ welfare measures at work and accommodation.
He said the ministry ensures all contractors complied with the ministry’s directives about labour and occupational safety measures.
