Qatar University (QU) has launched an Emergency Response Grant (ERG) in response to the potential exceptional impact of the current emergency situation. This specific grant is dedicated to emergency situations and will provide bridge support for new and early-stage investigations that provide a basis for more extensive research. The 2020 ERG theme is Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19), which is part of the international research effort to respond to COVID-19 and promotes the rapid initiation of scientific research.
The launch of this grant comes from the university’s concern for the nation’s health and safety. QU is committed to working with its faculty and researchers to contribute to ongoing research. ERG has a short life cycle to accelerate the start of the projects awarded, due to the critical nature of the situation.
Professor Mariam al Maadeed, Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies at QU, said, “This grant is in line with the university’s ongoing efforts to provide local and regional challenge-related research projects, particularly in the current situation the world is living through. The latest Coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) has shown the importance of supporting work at all human, technological, and financial levels. It has also shown us the importance of attracting and sponsoring additional research talent. The University has acquired a great deal of experience, developed its educational and research skills in this global situation and deepened its relationship with the issues of the nation and its community. I am very confident that this grant will help us attract distinguished specialised research talent.”

The objective of the grant include establishing dedicated research projects and teams to tackle Coronavirus Disease; researching the virus from different perspectives, such as length of incubation, phases, shapes and strains; contributing to improving effective safety plans and awareness; and highlighting the role of QU in addressing emerging concerns.
The grant is currently available for submission until 12 April 2020 for proposal intention and 28 April 2020 for final proposals. Submission is done via iGrants: https://www.conftool.org/igrants/
