Sana’a At least five inmates were killed on Sunday after a shell hit a women’s prison in Yemen’s embattled city of Taiz, according to a government official.
The head of the health office in Taiz, Abdel-Rehim al-Samei, told dpa that Yemen’s Houthi rebels had fired a shell at the women’s sector of the city’s central prison, injuring 23 prisoners.
So far there has been no comment from the Iran-linked rebels, who have been locked in a devastating war with the Saudi-backed government since late 2014.
Government forces are in control of the city, which is besieged by the Houthis.
Yemen’s feud has intensified since March 2015, when the Houthis advanced on the government’s temporary capital of Aden, prompting Saudi Arabia and its Sunni allies to start an air campaign against the Shiite group.
The conflict is seen as a proxy war between Saudi Arabia and its regional rival, Iran. (DPA)
