Sydney The number of novel coronavirus cases in New Zealand has reached over 1,000, health officials announced Sunday.
As of Sunday morning there were 1,039 cases in the country, up 89 from the previous day, while still only one person has died as a result of complications from Covid-19, the disease caused by the virus. New Zealand’s director general of health, Ashley Bloomfield, said at a news conference 156 patients have recovered.
The largest cluster of cases, 66, are connected to a school in Auckland, Bloomfield said. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said New Zealanders had mostly been complying well to strict lockdown policies, which had contributed to the disease spread being below what modelling had predicted.
“Our case rate and death toll is well below other comparable countries,” Ardern said at the same news conference. (DPA)
