Sana’a
A Saudi-led coalition said it launched an operation targeting Yemeni rebel posts on Monday, as residents said loud explosions were heard across the Yemeni capital Sana’a.
The coalition said the military operation is to destroy strategic targets affiliated with the Iran-backed Houthis rebels, who seized Sana’a in late 2014.
The goal is “to neutralize and destroy the ballistic threat” and other capabilities that threaten civilian lives, the coalition said, according to the Saudi Press Agency.
Residents told dpa that airstrikes targeted an area overlooking the presidential palace in southern Sana’a, while four other strikes targeted the military academy, in northern Sana’a, without material damage or casualties Saudi Arabia has been leading a military coalition fighting the Houthis since March 2015.
It was formed to stop the rebels from advancing towards Aden, the southern city which became the seat of government after the Houthis took over Sana’a.
The strikes come after the Houthi rebels said they had carried out a major operation using ballistic missiles and drones against “sensitive targets” in Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia said its air force had intercepted and destroyed two ballistic missiles fired late on Saturday by the Houthis in the direction of Riyadh and Jizan.
Shrapnel from one missile injured two civilians in Riyadh.
