SOME residential areas in 18 Turkish provinces were placed under quarantine on Monday to contain the spread of the coronavirus, the Interior Ministry said.
There have been 131 deaths from the Covid-19 disease caused by the virus and 9,217 confirmed cases since Turkey reported the first positive test on March 11.
Quarantines were imposed in 39 residential areas as of 3:15 pm (1215 GMT), the ministry said, but didn’t mention the names of the provinces. The shut-down locations include one small town and 28 villages.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is scheduled to address the nation after a cabinet meeting. Authorities in the country of 83 million have so far not revealed the locations of the deaths or illnesses.
Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said last week that this was done to avoid people moving out of areas with high infection rates, but also acknowledged that the virus has spread to all parts of the country.
Erdogan has so far not announced any curfews. The main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) has urged the government to impose “stay-at-home” orders.
