PARIS The French military will be using helicopters to transfer Covid-19 patients from hard-hit eastern France for treatment in Germany, Defence Minister Florence Parly said on Saturday.
Public broadcaster FranceInfo reported that the first two patients had been boarded on a Caiman helicopter in the eastern city of Metz.
“I give my deep thanks to our German friends for their support and solidarity,” Parly wrote on Twitter.
President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday announced a military operation nationwide to help hospitals and public services deal with the epidemic.
France has recorded 32,964 coronavirus infections and 1,995 deaths in the country’s hospitals alone, while deaths in the Greater East region are up overall more than 37 per cent on normal times.
The evacuees are not the first French patients to be brought elsewhere for treatment. (DPA)
