Dutch-Iraqi multimedia visual artist Nedim Kufi is showcasing his works for the first time in Qatar at an exhibition titled ‘Personal Dictionary’ which opened at the Fire Station on Wednesday.
The artworks on show until March 14 present Kufi’s identity as an artist and writer. The exhibition presents his concept of chaos and curiosity portrayed through categorical and formulaic de-layering of time, while also showing the opposing elements of finding harmony through personal definitions.
The works include a 300x400cm painting titled ‘My Dictionary’ which shows a black scene made of an imagery of chaos dealing with new terms through visual language. According to Kufi, he worked on the masterpiece in parts focusing on each section. He said it took him two weeks to complete the massive painting.
Other highlights of the collection include an oil-on-paper artwork titled ‘The Arab Pen’ which features a selection of Arab writers from the 20th century and the 270x270xm oil on canvas painting titled ‘The Blue Chaos’.
Kufi has conducted more than 20 solo exhibitions across the Middle East, the US and Europe. Bringing nature together is at the core of his practice, exploring the complex relationships between perceptions, imaginations and expressions.
The artist is currently in residence at the Fire Station as part of the Visiting Artist Program. He said he looks forward to exhibiting again in Doha with a different theme and concept sometime in October.
In a statement, Qatar Museums Curator of Contemporary Art Dr Bahaa Abudaya said, “We are very excited to display the art of a highly experienced artist such as Nedim Kufi. His work highlights the way images can create a language and how art is always up to interpretation. We hope his exhibition will spark creativity and inspiration for local artists – which is at the heart of the Fire Station.”
The exhibition is open from Saturdays to Thursdays from 9 am until 7 pm and on Fridays from 1.30pm until 7pm.Dutch-Iraqi artist Nedim Kufi holds first exhibition in Qatar
