Katara recently got the first-of-its kind 3-D mural of Qatar’s national animal oryx on the wall of its Building 40. The giant mural, which is 12m in height and 5m in width, was officially unveiled at a ceremony in the presence of HE Dr. Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti, general manager, Katara Cultural Village; Martin Ron, a world-renowned Argentine artist; HE Dr. Carlos Hernandez, ambassador of Argentina to Qatar; a number of diplomats; and art lovers.
Talking to Qatar Tribune on the sidelines of the official ceremony, Dr. Khalid Ibrahim Al Sulaiti lauded the art work of Martin Ron, saying the colors used by him last for a long time and in all seasons. “As per the artist, only the annual coat of varnish will be required
to preserve it in its original shape for long years,” he said, adding the painting will be displayed for years to come on the Katara Wall.
Martin, he noted, has done similar works all over the world.
Meanwhile, talking to Qatar Tribune, Martin said he had worked seven hours a day for five days to produce the giant 3-D oryx mural. “Over the past 15 years, it’s been my passion to travel around the world and paint giant 3-D murals of local concepts – both of humans and the animals. As for the Qatari map on the forehead of the oryx painting, it indicates the pride of Qatari nation moving forward.”
Martin added that this is his first visit to Qatar and he came here on the invitation of the Doha-based Pallas Art. He said he is very much inspired from Qatar’s development. “It was also my personal choice to paint oryx as I knew it has a special place in the Qatari society,” he noted.
The Argentine artist plans to create several murals around Doha, mainly in regards to the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He also plans to organise workshops with local artists.
Ambassador Dr. Carlos Hernandez told Qatar Tribune that he was inspired from the art work of Martin and was very happy to see the Argentinian artist’s first giant painting in Qatar and that too on the walls of Katara Cultural Village. He said although Martin was in Doha for some other purpose, it just happened by chance.
