Al Ahli Club caused a twist in the ongoing QVA League stunning Al Arabi Club in five sets by 27-25, 25-23, 19-25, 24-26, 15-12 at the QVA Hall in Doha on Monday.
The thrilling 127-mminute victory was fourth for Al Ahli in 11 matches and it also ended a 10-match winning streak for 25-time champions Al Arabi, who have been looking for their first League title in four years.
Earlier, defending champions Police posted their third win on the trot as they came from behind to overcome Al Shamal Club in four sets 18-25, 25-12, 25-19, 25-18. The 77-minute victory, their 10th in 12 games, put them on the top along with Al Arabi with 29 points.
However, Police have played 12 matches till now, tonight’s was the 11th match for Al Arabi, In the third place are Al Rayyan Club with 23 points from seven wins in 10 matches. Al Ahli have 20 points from seven wins in 11 matches and holding the fourth spot – the same as Al Wakrah.
Though all is not lost for Al Arabi, they may still go on to win the title if they don’t lose any more games or points. If they don’t, there may be some surprises coming in the way of double champions Police and nine-time winners Al Rayyan Club.
After sharing four sets, Al Ahli threatened Al Arabi with a 5-1 lead. Though Al Arabi managed to reduce the gap and only one point separated them before going on the home stretch (11-12). Al Ahli pulled away from there to win the tie-break set 15-12 and complete the big upset.
Roman Danilov, who collected 21 points for Al Ahli, got commendable support from Pavel Kuklinski and Miguel Dalmau. Kuklinksi’s 17 points had three aces and four blocks, while Dalmau got 15, including five blocks. Mohamed Bishri chipped in with 12.
For Al Arabi, Geraldo had a game-high 23 points. Valentin Bratoev and Bassam Ahmed secured 18 and 15, respectively. Renan Rebeiro got nine and Mohammed Ibrhaim had eight but Al Arabi were narrowly edged in blocks (9-12), serves and reception.
Good start by Shamal
Al Shamal had an early flourish and forged 8-5 ahead in the second set. They went on to consolidate the advantage and led 16-10 and 21-16 before sealing the set in 20 minutes.
Police then vented their fury and raced to an 8-3 lead. They kept reeling off points and moved 16-6 and 21-10 clear. They allowed only two more points to the rivals and won it to tie the set score 1-1.
Police maintained their domination through Dymtro Viietskyi Willner Rivas and Abdulwahid Osman and opened a good gap midway in both the remaining sets. Al Shamal resisted a bit but did not have enough arsenal to stop the opponents, losing the match in four sets.
Viietskyi collected 24 points, including 20 through attack. Rivas got 11, Osman had 10 and John Chigbo added eight for the winners.
For Al Shamal, Henrique Costa was the chief contributor with 24. Rabel William got 19 but other players failed to provide the desiredResultsResults of the Monday’s matches
