Qatar’s foreign merchandise trade surplus, which represents the difference between total exports and imports, increased by nearly QR1.8 billion, or 14.4 percent, to QR14.3 billion in December 2019, compared with the trade surplus in the previous month.
According to preliminary figures of the value of exports of domestic goods, re-exports, and imports for December 2019 released by the Planning and Statistics Authority, the total exports of goods including exports of goods of domestic origin and re-exports amounted to around QR23.6 billion, an increase of 6.4 percent compared to November 2019.
On the other hand, the imports of goods in December 2019 amounted to around QR9.3 billion, showing a decrease of 4 percent on a month- on- month (m-o-m) basis.
When compared with December 2018, the foreign merchandise trade surplus decreased 10 percent as the country’s exports and imports witnessed a decrease of 7.2 percent and 2.7 percent respectively.
The year- on- year decrease in total exports was mainly due to lower exports of petroleum gases and other gaseous hydrocarbons reaching QR15 billion approximately in December 2019, a decrease of 10.1 percent.
In December 2019, Japan was at the top of the countries of destination of Qatar’s exports with close to QR5 billion, a share of 21.1 percent of total exports.
It was followed by China with almost QR3.5 billion, a share of 14.7 percent and South Korea with about QR3.4 billion, a share of 14.2 percent. India and Singapore with QR3.2 billion and QR2.06 billion were at the fourth and fifth position respectively.
During December 2019, the group electrical apparatus was at the top of the imported group of commodities with QR0.34 billion, showing an increase of 56.2 percent compared to December 2018.
In second place was ‘motor cars and other motor vehicles for the transport of persons’ with QR0.32 billion, showing a decrease of 13.5 percent and in third place was ‘Parts of Balloons, Parts of Aircraft, Spacecraft’ with QR0.31 billion, a decrease of 10.5 percent.
In December 2019, United State of America was the leading country of origin of Qatar’s imports with about QR2 billion, a share of 22 percent of the imports, followed by China with QR1.2 billion almost, a share of 12.5 percent, and Germany with QR500 million, a share of 5.6 percent.
