QATAR University (QU) hosted the ninth awareness workshop for undergraduate students on agreements related to weapons of mass destruction, organised by the National Committee for the Prohibition of Weapons (NCPW), on Monday.
Held under the patronage of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defence Affairs HE Dr Khalid bin Mohammed al Attiyah, the workshop introduced students to the gravity of the nuclear, chemical and biological weapons of mass destruction issue, while informing them about the treaties signed in this regard and Qatar’s efforts in their implementation.
It also aimed at raising their awareness of the achievements of the NCPW in this context.
In his remarks at the opening of the workshop, QU President Dr Hassan al Derham said that the workshop focused on explaining the agreements to the students in order to prepare a conscious and peaceful generation that rejects violence and aggression and seeks a stable and safe world.
The workshop, he said, sought to facilitate constructive dialogue and enhance cooperation between officials, specialists and students from various institutions and universities as well as the NCPW for the larger goal of prohibition of weapons of mass destruction.
Chairman of the NCPW Brigadier-General (Air) Hassan Saleh al Nisf said that the workshop comes within the framework of the committee’s efforts to enhance societal awareness of the dangers of weapons of mass destruction, as part of the State’s obligations in this regard.
He pointed out that Qatar has joined agreements on banning such nuclear, chemical and biological weapons and restriction of conventional weapons that cause severe harm to civilians.
