Return To Senders bounced back brilliantly from a poor seventh-place finish in his last race to storm to victory in the Marmi Cup, the feature event of the 25th Race Meeting at the Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club Racecourse on Wednesday.
In the 12,00m sprint for three years olds, the Nasser al Eida’s bay colt produced a power-packed dash and emerged the winner, helping trainer Jassim Ghazali bag a fine treble for the day as well.
Ridden by Al Moatasem al Balushi, Return To Senders finished two and a half lengths ahead of second-placed X Force, with Tomas Lukasek astride. Chattanooga Boy came home in third place, less than two lengths behind.
Clan Royale was fourth with a quarter of a length difference against Fuwayrit.
This was the second winner in four races in the debut season for Return To Senders, who was seventh in the Al Rayyan Stakes last month after winning the Thoroughbred Plate (Class 2) for two years olds.
Rodeyna and Gangland, belonging to the Khalifa bin Sheail al Kuwari family, earlier won the races for trainer Ghazali. Rodeyna was ridden home by Marco Casamento by a short head against Rawdat Al Khail in the Local Thoroughbreds for Fillies and Mares.
Both Rodeyna and Rawdat Al Khail, another Ghazali ward, had a thrilling runs and upstaged higher-rated Sraab, Abha (Ras Laffan Cup winner) and Muraqabah (Al Dibal Cup champion).
Theo Bachelot helmed Gangaland to a half-length triumph over Sir Commander in the Thoroughbred Handicap (Class 3) 1,200m run. This was the first victory for the five-years-old grey gelding in five races in the season, taking overall tally to five in 26 starts.
Dabaab from Umm Qarn and Topsy Turvy, owned by Sheikh Faisal al Thani, shared other two big races on the card. Ridden by Ronan Thomas, the Alban de Mieulle ward stunned Rajeh by two lengths and three quarters to bag the Purebred Arabian Conditions 1,800m for her second victory in a row.
The grey mare, who won the Dukhan Cup earlier in the season, also completed a treble for rider Thomas, besides a double each for de Mieulle and Umm Qarn.
Thomas also piloted Sealine to his third victory in five races when the six-year-old grey horse beat Ghazi Al Jeryan by three quarters of a length in the Purebred Arabian Handicap 1,200m. This was the also the second winner in a row for the Umm Qarn runner and de Mieulle trainee.
Tomas Lukasek teamed up with Topsy Turvy superbly and the Ibrahim al Malki’s pupil got enough space and power to beat Rich History by two lengths in the Thoroughbred Conditions (Class 2) 1,800m. With this victory, Topsy Turvy comforted himself to a some measures for coming second to Third Dimension last year.Marmi Cup Day results (dirt)25th Race Meeting
