Doha
THROUGH its affiliated centres, the Ministry of Culture and Sports (MoCS) has a distinguished participation in the 30th edition of the Doha International Book Fair (DIBF), which runs until January 18 at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center, with the participation of 335 Arab and foreign publishing houses.
The participation of the ministry is diverse and rich as it covers various fields while its centres present aspects of literature and arts such as theatre, music and plastic arts as well as poetry. The ministry released several books and publications at the book fair. Besides, Qatari Authors’ Forum also unveiled their latest books.
In a statement to Qatar News Agency, Director of Culture and Arts Department Hamad Mohammed al Zakiba praised the Culture and Sports pavilion at this year’s book fair.
He said that the ministry’s pavilion includes the displays by the Department of Publications and Translation, Qatar Poetry Center (Diwan Al Arab), Department of Music and Visual Arts Affairs, in addition to the activities provided by the Wijdan Cultural Center, Center for Theater Affairs as well as the Qatar Social and Cultural Center for Blind, Media Center for Youth and Al-Reyada Girls Center and others.
The participation seeks to reiterate the ministry’s vision of creating a conscious and healthy community
The Wijdan Cultural Center’s stand at MoCS features interactive activities such as opinion polls for the public on the values of science, time and national identity.
The centre held a number of discussion sessions, training workshops and lectures, the most important of which is a lecture by Director General of Wijdan Cultural Center Dr Jassim Sultan.
The Media Center for Youth has a special pavilion in which it provides comprehensive daily coverage of various activities, seminars, workshops, cultural sessions and works of art.
Director of the Center for Theater Affairs Salah al Mulla said that the centre presented four works during its participation in the book fair while Al-Reyada Girls Center of the MoCS presented a collection of books in an attractive way. Prominent among the books displayed at the pavilion include a book by State Minister HE Dr Hamad bin Abdulaziz al Kuwari, Ibn Khaldun’s Prolegomena, a novel by Abdulaziz al Mahmoud, and a book by writer Muhanna bin Rashid al Asiri al Maadid.
The Al-Reyada Girls Center’s stand features books in four languages: Arabic, English, French and Turkish.
Among other centres of the Ministry of Culture and Sports participating in the book fair is the Qatar Social and Cultural Center for Blind which showcases traditional and modern methods that facilitate people with visual impairments to read, write and access knowledge.
Chairman of the centre’s Board of Directors Faisal al Kooheji stated that the centre through its participation in the book fair aims to highlight the most prominent tools that help blind and visually impaired people to read and write
The centre displays a number of apparatus and assistance tools used by people with visual impairment while the centre’s representatives describe to the visitors how to use them, in addition to introducing them to books printed in Braille.
