THE astronomical phenomenon known as ‘Jupiter in conjunction with the Sun’, will take place at 9:29pm (Doha time) on Friday (December 27), Qatar Calendar House (QCH) announced on Wednesday.
Dr Beshir Marzouk, expert astronomer at QCH, said the superior conjunction of Jupiter is an important astronomical event, which marks Jupiter’s transition from the evening sky over the western horizon to the dawn sky over the eastern horizon.
During superior conjunction of Jupiter, the centre of three celestial objects (Sun, Earth and Jupiter) is aligned on a straight line, with the Sun placed between Jupiter and Earth.
Besides, Jupiter reaches its farthest point from the Earth during conjunction with the Sun; where the distance between Jupiter and Earth will be 6.35 astronomical unit (AU). One AU equals 1.49 million kilometres.
Dr Marzouk added, “Residents of Qatar and other Arab countries will be able to observe Jupiter over the eastern horizon during the second half of January, 2020. The duration of rising time of Jupiter and sunrise will be increasing during next few weeks. Moreover, on Friday, Jupiter will be rising and setting simultaneously with the Sun over the eastern and western horizon respectively and therefore, it would be impossible watch the spectacle.”
The superior conjunction of Jupiter occurred last time on November 26, 2018. The next superior conjunction of Jupiter with Sun will take place on January 29, 2021.
