A Flower Each Spring Program celebrated the launch of its 2019-2020 season recently. The event also included beach cleanup activity at Al Khor.
The 22nd edition of the programme kicked off with a field trip to Al Khor to campaign for this year’s flower, the Fagoniabruguieri DC, known as Al Showeika in Arabic.
The participants came from the International Walking Football Federation in Qatar, the Tanzanian community in Qatar, Middle East International School (MIS), Stafford Sri Lankan School Doha and National Kindergarten. Individuals and VIP guests also attended the opening ceremony.
The free trips are organised to increase the involvement of schools in educational field trips on environment.
During the beach cleaning, the young volunteers collected huge quantity of trash including bottles, ropes, light bulbs, cigarette butts, pieces of broken glass, plastic wastes, fishing nets, wires, foams and a disposed plastic drum filled with dripping oil in the mangroves of Al Khor. They also found seven dead birds in the coastal area.
The beach cleanup aimed at removing harmful waste and to raise awareness of people about the importance of protecting the marine environment and life.
At the end of the three-hour campaign, the volunteers had filled three dozens of large garbage bags.
“It was a wonderful learning experience to be part of the opening ceremony of A Flower Each Spring’s scientific trip followed by a beach cleanup. Students learnt a lot as they moved from one station to another. For example, they learnt about how we can conserve electricity and the benefits of conservation. Students also learnt about the marine life and the damage that plastic can cause to it,” said Elliot Nyamvura, a teacher at Middle East International School.
Fatma Hassan, Event/School coordinator, A Flower Each Spring Program, said: “We need to stop littering and prevent pollutants from entering our waters endangering marine life. It truly touched our hearts to see the younger generation getting seriously involved in beach cleaning. We thank everyone who participated in the drive and urge companies, communities and other groups to volunteer for a cause and help us protect the beauty and richness of Qatar.”
