Antananarivo: Nine people are dead and three others missing after Cyclone Belna made landfall in north-western Madagascar, an official said on Tuesday.
Elack Andriakaja, the head of the island state’s disaster authority, told dpa that the nine who were killed in the city of Soalala had been “trapped by flood water.” Government buildings, roads and homes were destroyed by the cyclone, which reached wind speeds of 130 kilometres per hour late on Monday.
Local newspaper Midi-Madagascar quoted Soalala lawmaker Naina Randriamisa as saying that “80 per cent of roofs have been destroyed and water continues to rise” in most neighbourhoods. (DPA)
